Harriet Tubman was born a slave in 1821. Harriet Tubman was raised a slave and spent a big part of her life working on a plantation. At one point in her life, Harriet was able to escape slavery to freedom in Pennsylvania. When Harriet was a young woman, she led hundreds of slaves to freedom. She spoke against slavery and fought for women's rights. During the Civil War, Harriet worked as a nurse, a cook and a scout for the Union Army. Harriet cared a great deal for people and their safety.
Harriet is most known for freeing slaves and leading them to safety where they could remain free and no longer be slaves. Harriet was able to lead the slaves to freedom through something called "The Underground Railroad" and became
known as the "conductor" on the Underground Railroad. Harriet and the slaves she was trying to get to freedom followed the North Star to freedom. This was very
dangerous because any slaves that were caught would be punished and sent back to their owners. Anyone caught helping the slaves escape would also be punished.
Harriet died in 1913.
