Harriet Tubman was born a slave in 1821. Harriet Tubman
was raised a slave and spent a big part of her life working on a plantation.
At one point in her life, Harriet was able to escape slavery to freedom
in Pennsylvania. When Harriet was a young woman, she led hundreds of
slaves to freedom. She spoke against slavery and fought for women's
rights. During the Civil War, Harriet worked as a nurse, a cook and
a scout for the Union Army. Harriet cared a great deal for people
