Sojourner Truth


Sojourner Truth was born a slave in 1797. Sojourner's real name was Isabelle Baumfree. She was freed by a law in New York that said that all slaves who were over 28 years old had to be freed. Sojourner felt that she often received messages from God and said that God had given her a new name: Sojourner Truth. Sojourner would become a traveling preacher and speak about abolishing slavery and equal rights for all women because she believed this was her mission in life. Sojourner Truth was an important woman who spoke out against slavery and how women were treated.
Sojourner died November 26th, 1883.
